LATE AUGUST

I've always loved that point in late August when the weather cools down, it rains a bit, and autumn is near. Other than the fact that the summer heat is (mostly) over, I think I like it because it means I can finally stop wearing shorts and tshirts and break out the long sleeves, jeans, jackets and scarves.

Ah, scarves. My favorite accessory. My late August desire for a new scarf got me off my butt and into my studio. Last night, around 10pm, I decided to break out the sewing machine and whip one up using old button down shirts...

It's been a while since I've sewn and it felt good. I've been pretty busy lately, and getting back to the studio was a nice break.

JA ODER NEIN?

Scarves... yes or no?

I'm curious what your thoughts are...

SCARF-O-RAMA

I am a total night owl... The other night, at 11:30pm, I had the urge to sew up a scarf. So I did...

I finished it at 1am. I had a lot of fun sewing this up. Looks great on Miss G-Thang above.

ATTEMPT THREE

Still working on the knitted/sewing hybrid pillows. This is my third attempt...

You can see the pillow form sticking out in the back. I thought maybe less of an overlap might help the problem of the knitted fabric pulling and distorting the pillow. That didn't work. I am going to try putting in a zipper in the center of the back and see if that solves the issue. (I can't put the zipper on the side because it'd be too difficult with the thickness of the knitted fabric.)

I am also still working out my overall aesthetic. It's a delicate balance of wild and wacky thrift shop fabrics, bright colors, bold patterns with the overall goal of sophistication. This one is getting closer, I think. I love the colors and the stripes combined with the black and white pattern.

ATTEMPT TWO

I was feeling creative yesterday, so I sewed another pillow. This time I decided to work with fabric only, as opposed to the knitted "fabric" I used the last time.

And, I even put in a zipper. My first!

This pillow took a long time to sew, but I do like the results...

ATTEMPT ONE

This is my first attempt at making a pillow with "fabric" that I knitted on the knitting machine.

What do you all think? Feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

FLOWER

Whipped up this tote bag last night for my friend Megan...

I once again used Super Eggplant's tote bag tutorial. It was pretty easy and only took maybe an hour.

YAY, SEWING!

I was feeling creative today, so I grabbed some of my thrifted bedsheets, used Super Eggplant's "tote bag 101" tutorial and made this...

Tote_bag01

This was my first attempt at a tote bag. I am happy with the way it turned out. The lining scared me but turned out to be easy.

I think I will make a few more, maybe to use as grocery tote bags.

AIR FRANCE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS

Do you remember in the summer when I was picking out fabric and deciding on costumes for the group that I teach? Well, I recently had to do the same thing for our winter competition season. Although, this time I had to make some of the costume myself.

We are using music from the movie Amelie, which sounds VERY French. The movie is set in 1997, but our show is set in early 1900s Paris (think Moulin Rouge), so the costumes had to be a bit over the top. We decided to have them wear wigs with pill box hats adorned with feathers. We hired somebody to make the jackets, and the rest of the costume is just off-the-shelf dancewear. But, the hats were too easy to make to hire somebody, so I had to sew them. I was up until 2am every day last week sewing the hats...

...I really think it was worth it, don't you? Oh, and I made the neck ties, too, which was really just hemming a big rectangle.

I was a bit afraid of making the hats, since the last time I tried to set a circle of fabric into a large opening it didn't go too well. But I figured it out and it wasn't too bad.

I also hadn't sewn in a long time, which made me miss it. Can't wait to start sewing again, once I have more time.

I was teasing the kids that they look like Air France stewardesses from the 1960s. The kids weren't so sure about the costumes until they got a ton of compliments about them on Saturday. You know how teenagers are... they just need some reassurance.

GETTING BETTER

I have been working on some more bracelets to send to friends...

Some are a bit wonky, but you really can't see that when they are on your wrist. I am also using a smaller snap, which helps the visual balance. At least they are getting better.

THRIFT SHOP SATURDAY NIGHT

I had the urge to go thrifting today. Perhaps because of all the money I spent in Las Vegas, I felt the need to limit myself to inexpensive merchandise.

my bathroom floor is a great background for spontaneous photo shoots

I found some really great linens, as well as a cool orange tray/dish and a coffee/tea carafe.

Las Vegas photos coming soon...

SEWING IS BETTER THAN KNITTING WHEN IT'S HOT OUTSIDE

Sorry for the lack of knitting content. I have been knitting, but there is nothing really to show you other than some half finished something or other that really isn't that impressive.

I have been working on more wrist cuffs...

Wristband04

They are improving. I have started adding snaps instead of using Velcro, although the ones I bought are too big.

Wristband03

Still having an issue with pressing the seams once the three edges are sewn. I also am having trouble sewing up the fourth edge with a blind stitch. Hopefully, I will figure it out soon...

...FIGHTING FOR OUR RIGHTS, IN HER SATIN TIGHTS...

Last night, around 10pm, I decided I was going to make some super cool Wonder Woman wristband/bracelet/cuff things...

I am still figuring them out, but the first two didn't turn out too bad. I made these using Velcro, although I think I will try the next few with snaps. I think Wonder Woman would be proud.

QUILT #1

This afternoon I sewed the quilt squares to form the top of the quilt.

Drew_with_quilt
yep, it's a baby quilt

The squares weren't all even, so you can see that it doesn't want to lay flat. But, hey, it's my first quilt, so sue me.

The next step is to sandwich the top, the batting and the bottom together. I have chosen a yellow for the back. I think the trim is going to be pink, but I am not sure...

GETTING CLOSER

I have finished sewing all the squares for the baby quilt. I wasn't sure about my color choices but seeing all the squares together makes me less anxious.

A lot still to do before this Saturday, but I think it's achievable.
